In 2013, Google wanted to launch its newest tablet, the Nexus 7, at I/O, and they came to Autofuss to create a commercial that could speak to all of its capabilities. Instead of just highlighting features, we made it instrumental in helping a young boy overcome life’s greatest fear: public speaking. Our hero, Evan, watched The King’s Speech, studied books, took inspiration from music, wrote in Google Docs, and heeded the weighty words of Franklin D Roosevelt’s inauguration 80 years earlier.
Jason and I even tried to get the young actor to make an appearance at Google I/O and give the product announcement speech himself, but Randy wouldn't let us present that idea to the Zi and Kenzo. I wish I could get that one back.
We followed Evan’s story up with a one about a young man trying to rush home from college to his ailing best friend. Two weeks before we started working on this, my old art director’s dog, Boomer, was diagnosed with a cancer spot on his heart. We wrote this for Tyler, Boomer, and people with four-legged family members everywhere. It was no coincidence that Boomer passed away the day this went live.
The Google EMEA team and I worked well together on a previous job, so when they got in a bind this time around, they asked me to step in and lead the creative. I combed through 4 days of film to build half an edit, sold a new story with placeholder shots, and worked with the original director to capture one more day’s worth of footage. See if you can spot which footage was from the original production, and which shots we picked up.
